Urinary-Tract-Infection-Urosepsis-Case-Study Introduction: Jean Kelly is an 82-year-old woman who has been tired for the past three days and has had a fever in the last 24 hours. She reported pain ... during urination, burning sensation and frequency of urination last week. The daughter began to worry and took her to the emergency room (ED) when she didn't know what day it was today. She is sharp-minded and has no chaotic history. When she was taking a shower today, she was weak and unable to get out of her body and used her personal life alert button to request medical assistance. OVERVIEW OF THE DISEASE Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are caused by pathogenic microorganisms in the urinary tract. UTIs are generally classified as infections involving the upper or lower urinary tract. (Brunner & Suddarth’s Medical-Surgical Nursing) Urinary tract infections are a leading cause of morbidity and healthcare expenditures in persons of all ages. UTIs are the leading cause of systemic infections in older adults. Because the female urethra is shorter, and in closer proximity to the vagina and rectum, women are especially vulnerable to UTIs. UTIs can affect both upper urinary tract, involving the kidneys and ureters and/or lower urinary tract, involving the bladder and urethra. (Lippincott Williams & Wilkin’s Fundamental of Nursing) Types of UTI Lower UTIs Cystitis – inflammation of the urinary bladder Prostatitis – inflammation of the prostate gland Urethritis – inflammation of the urethra Upper UTIs Acute pyelonephritis – inflammation of the renal pelvis Chronic pyelonephritis – repeated bouts of acute pyelonephritis [Show More]
