My role specialization is Nurse Practitioner. The problem of childhood obesity is interesting to me because I deal with the topic on a daily basis. Research on this topic will potentially allow for better communication with patient’s parents during my nutritional counseling sessions. Moving forward in my career, I plan to work with hypertension and diabetes programs within Georgia’s Department of Public Health. Since childhood obesity has been linked to comorbidities including hyperinsulinemia, obesity, hypertension, and dyslipidemia in adulthood, I believe that this research topic will positively contribute to my current and future professional endeavors (Moglia & Dill, 2013). Library search strategies for the research topic included a general search for “childhood obesity” and a follow up search for “childhood obesity prevention.” The current research and research moving forward throughout the course will seek to answer the question: “What are common traits of those suffering from childhood obesity and how can these commonalities be used to aid the medical community in prevention of the disease?” An article by Moore, Wilkie, & Desrochers (2017) discussed familial influence on childhood obesity and how familial socialization can either lead a child toward or away from obesity. Research conducted by TurnerJohnson, Montgomery, Clark, & Taylor (2017) sought to describe how the Community Readiness Model assessed the stage of readiness for childhood obesity prevention in a rural, southern community. Finally, Alleman, Murphy, Baskerville, & Chugh (2017) performed research to assess the prevalence of childhood obesity and hypertension among kindergarten, sixth-, and ninth-grade students.
