Hello Dr. Curcio and Class, The reading on the role of social determinants is a great read. Many don’t realize that there are many outside factors that contribue to ones great or poor health. According to the a s article ocial detminant of health can be anything that can affect an individuals overall health. These things include environment, education, access to care, neighborhood, employment, and social support services offered in your community. Social determinants can affect a person in both positive and negative ways. A person who is wealthy with access to money, supports, and education will in theory have an overall wellbeing; and it’s the opposite for those people who are poor or improvished. Poverty is a public health crisis with many Americans living and suffering from poverty. Often times improvised children go without the basic medical needs like vaccines, dental heatlh, and medicines needed to care for chronic illnesses like asthma. According to the world health organization 1.2 billion people in the world live in extreme poverty. Poorer neighborhoods are more likely to have high crime rates, lower performing schools, and less access to healthier food sources. It is more difficult for individuals with little money to pay for gym memberships, be able to afford healthier food options for their families when these foods are too expensive or there isn’t a place in their neighborhood to purchase the healthier foods, and even getting themselves or children to medical or dental appointments especially when they can’t afford transportation or have to rely on public transportation. The article mentions iniatives that are at the state and federal level to help address some of the social determinants to health. The problem with these programs at the state level is that there can still be individuals disinfranchised from services. The government needs to work on initiatives that will improve global health and wellbeing. One of the many problems with improving health and the wellbeing of the country is that it can be a political game with devision on where and who to fund with often times the poor and elderly populations at the loosing end of the battle.
