World system and colonialism  Sources of political change that are result of conflict with different society  Major source of change in human societies has been conflict with culturally differen ... t society  Colonialism and capitalism -> major sources of change Franchise Colonialism – the political and social domination of culturally unrelated group in different territory; geographically distant territories. First Phase: driven by commercial capital desires to set a outpost for market  Start at second half of the 15th century-> because of new technological development.  New navigation technology-> allows for development of new commercial method.  European expansion if world system – when there are many localities in different places around the globe brought together into a single world market.  World market - when prices for commodities at one part of the world affect prices for commodities of other part of the world; holistic perspective.  Native people were decimated, enslaved, infected by diseases, killed by competition, etc. Second Phrase (industrial revolution phase): driven by industrial production, extraction of natural resources.  Cheap labor and natural resources that are rare in the motherland.  Use of political control of distant geographical society to reinforce economic resources.  Most of the colonial and imperialist expansion during industrial revolution phase.  The height or climax was mid-19th century.  Birth of new relationship – colonizer (European) and colonized (third world; non-European people).  Economic production system - Colonized people extracted resources cannot extract in European societies (sugar, gold, salt, silver, bananas, furs)-> sent to European countries where raw materials become production that sell in the societies.  Justification of colonialism is always racism; also from paternalism to need to teach and model different life for savage colonized.  If colonized become conformed into colonizer’s life, then there is no reason to actually colonize them -> so they will teach the model but never can be the same; racism to keep the balance.
