Ecology falls within the branch of Biology that studies how and why organisms interact with each other and their environment.
Ecology is NOT the same thing
as protecting the environment, although modern media portrays it in
this manner.
Within the science of ecology, the nature of a community is determined by factors related to the means of life in that specific habitat community.
There are two communities, divided in accordance to their specific nature of life:
1. Abiotic
2. Biotic
The interaction that occurs when a resource is in short supply and one organism uses this resource at the expense of another is referred to as competition.
Factors that affect competition include:
• Who gets to have more of the resources?
• How does the competition relate to survival?
• What are the limiting factors for each population?
Two Types:
1. Intraspecific competition
• Competition between members of the same species
2. Interspecific competition
• Competition between members of different species
Sometimes, nature interferes and the superior competitor is prevented from excluding the inferior species completely.
In these instances, the species will often times coexist by resource partitioning, or dividing the resource, although coexisting does not come without a price.
Examples:
• Certain species of fish consume different kinds of seaweed
• Certain types of seabirds that consume the same exact fish may then feed at different times, or live in different places
• Although coexisting, the more dominant of the two species will continue to reproduce while the lesser species will not be as successful
• Over time, natural selection will come into effect and the superior species will become dominant
