Delusions, hallucinations, cognitive impairment, disorganized thinking and speech, alogia, and catatonic behavior that are indicative of loss of contact with reality are all the psychotic signs and symptoms of schizophrenia (NIMH, 2019; Stahl, 2013). For an individual to be diagnosed with schizophrenia, these noted symptoms that influence activities of daily living should be present for six months (Stahl, 2013). Schizophrenia occurs in all societies, irrespective of race, religion, culture, or class (Stahl, 2013). It is estimated that 300,000 acute schizophrenic incidents occur annually in the United States, affecting 2.2 million people (Stahl, 2013). Schizophrenia is amongst the top 15 leading causes of disability worldwide, with those same schizophrenic individuals having an increased risk of premature mortality (NIMH, 2019).
