A valuable nursing theory that can be utilized to guide clinical practice as an
advanced practice nurse is the Neuman Systems Model. Betty Neuman constructed
the model to holistically manage patients while maintaining comprehensive, flexible,
system-based care (Wills & McEwen, 2002). It seems that often times, patients are
not treated in a holistic manner. Treating the patient holistically leads to improved
patient outcomes and increased patient satisfaction.
There are five interacting client system variables that Neuman outlines in her
theory. These variables include physiological, psychological, sociocultural,
developmental, and spiritual (Neuman & Fawcett, 2012). Caring for these variables
when treating the patient will improve patient-provider interactions. This will lead
to a more trustworthy relationship and an overall improved rapport.
The role of advanced practice nursing emerged to help meet the needs of
changing healthcare, however, the importance of a framework is required to prevent
loss of efficacy of the role (Chang, Gardner, Duffield, & Ramis, 2011). As a student
the domains will be met at various times throughout the course. Three of the
domains will be utilized from week 1 through the end of the course. During week 1
when I begin seeing patients, I will develop a practitioner- patient relationship by
using the Neuman Model, this concept is domain number 2. Domain number four
