Category Social-Emotional Development Milestones
Negative Interaction/behavior Mom texts at the meeting indicating obsession with the phone. She is
texting happily and seems contented than when interacting with the baby. Most of her conversations with the baby involve yelling.
Positive
interaction/behavior The baby seems slightly connected to the mother. He seems at peace
with the mother around. He is also calm during and after the yelling.
Guidelines or Recommendation Increase the time spent with the baby to be able to create a strong bond of affection. Reduce time spent using the phone, the child may develop the same habit in the future which is harmful to his health (Malik & Marwaha, 2020). Lastly, get a different method of instilling order in the
baby apart from yelling.

Professional/Ethical Communication I see that you are trying to create a connection with your child. Try being there in times of need like feeding and do it yourself. That way
you will create the expected bond with your child.
Clinical Pearl Issue #2
Category Safety
Negative
Interaction/behavio The mother places the child on the table but her concentration is easily
distracted by the phone. Also, her yelling may have impacts on the
r child’s wellbeing as it may trigger an injurious movement or mental
conditions. The mother buys the child a puzzle, this is dangerous as the child might choke on it.
Positive interaction/behavior Mom is committed to the child’s safety as she installs gates at the bottom and top of the stairs and the basement doors. The gates are important in preventing falls down the stairs or into the pavement. The gate is also important as it keeps the baby within reach when the mother
is busy in the house.
Guidelines or Recommendation Avoid distractions when with the baby as accidents may happen unawares. As Ablewhite et al. (2015) assert, reducing time spent on the phone helps in ensuring that most accidents are prevented or tended earlier. Safety is paramount as it helps ensure that the baby grows
normally in all aspects.

health, 15(1), 983.
Professional/Ethical Communication I see that you are trying to discipline you child to ensure he grows up responsibly. Try taking meditation classes to be able to focus and reduce anxiety and anger which may lead to yelling. You can enroll in classes like yoga which helps in meditation and focusing on breathing to abate
fear, worry and improve concentration on specific issues.

which is not advised.
Positive interaction/behavior The mother’s respect for the child as she cannot smoke in her room. Also, the presence of a drug cabinet where harmful drugs and poisons are kept is a positive behavior (Farber et al., 2015). The mom also identifies that she has a poison control number in her phone for the
child's safety.
Guidelines or Recommendation Try quitting cigarette smoking for the benefit of your child by reducing the rate of intake. Also, keep all drugs away from the child as he may take the drugs without your consent. This applies to all drugs whether
harmful or not.

e1439-e1467.
Professional/Ethical Communication It is very clear that you have good intentions for your baby as you do not smoke in her room. The impacts of smoking on the baby include breathlessness and coughs. Long exposure leads to the development of ear infections treated through surgery and inserting tubes for drainage. It is paramount that you find an alternative habit that gives you the same
pleasure other than smoking.

Guidelines or Recommendation Remember to always put the drugs in the locked cabinet to ensure the baby does not access them. Also, ensure that cigarette filters are well disposed to avoid choking the baby (Galvez & Balk, 2017). Lastly, maintain the habit of cooking using the back burners for the child’s

of choking to be able to detect it earlier and save the child’s life.

Interaction/behavio r The child does not have a constant sleep pattern. Also, the use of TV as
a method of inducing sleep in babies is harmful. TV affects the sleeping habits of the child as he may be unable to get sleep after some time.
Positive The mother has tried many ways to put the baby to sleep. She also
interaction/behavior awakes the baby when the nap is too long. This is important as it
ensures the baby gets enough sleep during the night.
Guidelines or Recommendation Set a sleeping routine for your baby with the help of a doctor to ensure he gets the optimum sleep time. According to Tham et al. (2017), television addiction has additional negative impacts on the baby like experiencing nightmares and daytime tiredness. Methods like singing
and storytelling are preferred.
