Per Dr. Strathmann – his review discussed every question that is going to be on the exam. He
was difficult to hear at times because he was cutting out, but I think I got the jist of everything!
As I said in the email – if I skip study guide question, it is because it is not on the test.

Relaxes smooth muscle and arterials, good for Benign prostatic hypertrophy.

Reduce vascular and smooth muscle tone in arterials, (Not the capillary bed or artery).
5. What effect will result with rapid withdrawal of a beta blocker?
In patient’s with CHF = MI. Very important to taper doses.

8. Why are beta blockers cautiously prescribed to diabetic clients?
Avoid prescribing to diabetics! Beta blockers block the body’s response to hypoglycemia

However – it DOES NOT block diaphoresis or sweating (only thing it doesn’t block).

Release of dopamine at the CNS center – Increase in gastric acid so it can cause healing
in patients with esophagitis or peptic ulcers.
Nicotine gum works because nicotine is bound to resins in the gum, which is only
activated when chewing. Buccal administration – Have patient chew 3 times, hold the
gum between their teeth and their cheek. Avoid swallowing their spit while chewing
nicotine gum – can cause severe nausea
