Take a few moments to reflect on what it means to live in a democracy. We enjoy a wide variety of freedoms and rights in
the United States, but rights often come with obligations (similar to a contract). Do you think that we, as citizens, have any
obligations to the U.S. political system and to our fellow citizens in exchange for the benefits that our representative
government provides? Explain your response.

Democracy is a system where people have the right to vote for their leaders. A system of government that is democratic entails vesting supreme power to citizens through representatives who are periodically voted for. Generally, democracy involves enjoyment of variety of rights and freedom in a given state. In the United States, there is right and freedom to religion, speech, press, assembly and freedom to petition the government. Together, these rights makes the United States citizens the freest in the world. The government establishes these rights in the constitution thus protecting individual citizens regardless of religion, culture and background. However, these rights and freedom come with obligations and responsibilities that is the civic duty to attain societal standards. The mandatory obligations of the United States citizens include payment of taxes, services to the jury upon summoning, registration with selective services, voting, community involvement and obeying the laws. Just to expound on a few, all citizens are obliged to pay their taxes in all forms including the federal, local, the state, the social security and sales tax. The US federal law requires that all citizens above the age of 18 years to 25 years should register with the selective services. Those who do not register are subject to prosecution and if convicted they be fined or serve a maximum of five years in prison. That is just but a few of the obligations that the United States citizens have to the political system
