Analysis of a pertinent healthcare issue: Nursing shortage The purpose of this assignment is to address and analyze nursing shortages and how this remains pertinent in healthcare and at this curren ... t organization. Nurses are an integral part of healthcare, although the nursing profession continues to face shortages. Employment opportunities for nurses are projected to grow at a faster rate (12%) than all other occupations from 2018 through 2028 (US Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2019). The nursing profession continues to face shortages for several reasons, including the aging population, an aging workforce, nurse burnout, career versus family, regional deficits, growth, and even violence in the healthcare setting. (Haddad & Toney-Butler, 2019) Statistics indicate that around 2026 the nursing shortage will leave a deficit of approximately one million nurses. (AACN,2019) These statistics are alarming and already present in our organization. Nursing shortage impact The nursing shortage is a problem that is prevalent in our organization currently. Statistically, night shift struggles with staffing ratios on a consistent basis where the day shift has intermittent staffing issues. Within the past two months, critical pay and incentive pay has been offered for every shift of the week, with the average nurse working a minimum of two twelve- hour overtime shifts within a two-week period. Our current unit has two nighttime charge positions open, a management position, and at any given time six full-time floor nursing shifts. The shortage of staffing on the unit has recently been recognized and has left staff burnt out, underappreciated and resulted in multiple staff members leaving the organization. With the current healthcare focus switching from the triple aim to the quadruple aim, it is pertinent that upper management and organizations start to focus on employee’s well- being. Studies show that engage employees who feel appreciated, cared for, and heard are more likely to perform positively and enhance an organizations well-being. (Jacobs, Mcgovern, Heinmiller & Drenkard, 2018) The answer to the nursing shortage is not a simple one, but there are some steps being taken by other facilities that may be beneficial to address the issue. ....................................................................CONTINUED.....................................................
