Thanh Vo History 170 Professor Wilson 12 December, 2018 Defending Slavery 1. Some scholars suggest that the excerpts from Thomas Jefferson are not “proslavery” but actually show his hostilit... y to slavery. What do you think? Is it possible to offer a proslavery argument while at the same time disliking slavery and wishing It did not exist? I think that Thomas Jefferson was proslavery because he does not show any sympathy towards slaves. You can not be part of something and to wish it not to exist. He supports the idea of slavery from the beginning and him disliking it would be stupid because he supports it. One does not simply support two ideas because that would just be hypocritical. He stated that “The blacks, whether originally a distinct race, or made distinct by time and circumstances, are inferior inferior to the whites in the endowments of both body and mind.” (53) Thomas Jefferson obviously thinks that the blacks are inferior to the whites and that they should be ruled over and should be submissive to their owner.
