Sociology > CASE STUDY > SOCS 185N Week 2 Assignment: Sociological Imagination & Socialization (All)
Sociological Imagination & Socialization Chamberlain College of Nursing SOCS185N I believe this is not a personal problem for Arty. Whe... n Arty takes out a loan it essentially affects the rest of the economy. Student loans are something most college students have to worry about. The standard of success is the capability to achieve that college education. However, a college degree can be so costly, an individual can spend the rest of your life paying for it. In the 2018- 2019 academic year, private college tuition costs an average of “$35,830 per year and as for public college, it cost $10,230” (Bustamante, 2019). Statistics have said it is estimated $1.5 trillion in student debt in 2019. With the cost of room, books, and supplies the cost rapidly increases. “The average cost of a 4-year public university including room and other costs rises to 21,370” (Bustamante, 2019). For a teenager from a middle-class family who is planning on going to college, this can be devastating. Several students after understanding the financial part decide to find an alternative, like going to community college or taking a year off to save the money and trying to figure out how to afford the education. This could result in a lot of stress on these teenagers who just want the education to pursue a career of their choice. These are several forces that can be playing a role in Arty’s struggles. Potentially there are two main stages of socialization: primary and secondary socialization. Primary socialization is referred to as “the initial process of socialization through which an individual becomes a human being capable of functioning in society” (Kendall, 2018). This is attained by parents educating their kids on proper and adequate social behaviors. I think this is a significant lesson because if parents do not discipline their children and do not correct them from right or wrong, they will never learn what is and is not acceptable in society. Secondary socialization is commonly known as “socialization that occurs throughout a person's lifetime” (Kendall, 2018). Primary socialization is usually learned in the house whereas secondary socialization occurs in an outside setting like schools. This socialization is a vital part of life because it allows kids to learn how to act and behave in a social setting and learning how to work in a group. I believe this type of socialization is more difficult because being accepted by peers is not always easy and can be challenging. However, this will allow them to sort through and face their challenges then and even later on in life. With secondary socialization, there are essentially two subcategories: anticipatory socialization and resocialization. Anticipatory socialization is understood as “a learning process for future roles” (Kendall, 2018). In other words, incorporating the social norms of a group an individual plans on joining in the future. Resocialization, on the other hand, is “the simultaneous learning and unlearning of some social roles to be replaced by the learning of new social roles” (Kendall, 2018). All these types of socialization play a vital role throughout an individual’s life because it allows them to get used to and continue to communicate with society. References Bustamante, J.
