Enumeration of a Microbial, E.coli, Population using Different Methods to Calculate the CFU/mL Introduction Enumeration is the determination of number of individual viable microbial population in a ... sample (Gilbride & Victorio, 2015). Enumerating microorganisms is a significant procedure, which provides important information about how microorganisms grow. Micro-organismal growth is promoted due to factors such a quality and abundance of food, water and other pharmaceutical products (Gilbride & Victorio, 2015). Bacteria increase in size, duplicate and grow in number through a process called binary fission. Binary fission occurs after genetic material is replicated; it ultimately aids increasing population size by producing two nearly equal sized, identical daughter cells. The difference between individual and population growth is crucial because growth of microorganisms is studied in terms of population size (Gilbride & Victorio, 2015).
