Biology > STUDY GUIDE > BIO 171 - Microbiology Module 1 Review. (All)
Microbiology Microbiology is the study of microbes (microorganisms and viruses) and their biological processes. Module 1 Notes 1 cell = building blocks made of Macromolecules A macromolecule is c ... lassified as a complex molecule that is composed from smaller subunits. Subunits are listed below. 4 - (proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, polysaccharides) PNLP 1. Sugars = POLYSACCHARIDES 2. Fatty acids = Fats, lipids, (membrane) LIPIDS 3. Amino acids = proteins PROTEINS 4. Nucleotides = nucleic acids (DNA, RNA) Proteins : are Polymers (large molecule comprised of smaller subunits) (subunits are amino acids) Functions – can be enzymes, cell structures, and put together organism tissues (muscles) and toxins - Made of amino acids mostly - Facilitate movement of materials in or outside of the cell - Some can act as enzymes (catalyst that speed up bio-chemical processes) - Some play structural role - Some enable movement (filaments) - Proteins are formed by vary combinations of amino acids o There are 20 different kind of amino acids – the different combinations form different proteins Held together by peptides String of amino acids o Example: largest protein is titin, made of 33,000 amino acids - 9 essential amino acids which cannot be produced but ingested Proteins may facilitate the movement of materials in or out of a cell. Some can act as enzymes that catalyze, or speed up, biochemical processes. Others play a structural role while other proteins, suc [Show More]
