Description: Allied Health 139 introduces foundational concepts related to the emergency medical care of sick and
injured persons. This course is designed for students interested in pursuing emergency medical services as
a career or other related healthcare occupations. Topics include the framework of emergency medical
services and the unique challenges of ethical dilemmas and stress management in the emergency setting.
Successful completion of the class includes certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) CPR for
Healthcare Providers.

1. Describe the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Systems and differentiate the roles and
responsibilities of the EMT-Basic from other prehospital care providers using the California specific
statutes and regulations.
2. Recognize the emotional, physical, pathological hazards of the EMT working environment.
3. Will be able to identify, discuss and define the medical legal conditions that apply to the EMTBasic working environment.
4. Describe the anatomy and physiology of the following major body systems: Respiratory, Circulatory,
Musculoskeletal, Nervous and Reproductive and Endocrine
5. Assess and identify Adult, Child, Infant, and Neonates in Respiratory and Cardiac inadequacies and
perform appropriate care and treatment according to the America Heart Associations Health Care
Providers Standards.
Goals: Upon successful completion of the required coursework, the student will be able to:
1. Discuss the structure and significance of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) system.
2. Describe the ethical responsibilities of healthcare providers.
3. Describe the structure and general functions of various body systems.
4. Identify the signs and symptoms of common medical emergencies related to various body systems.
5. Describe the signs and symptoms of common communicable diseases encountered in various emergency
settings.
6. Demonstrate the appropriate techniques for using personal protective equipment to reduce the risk for
acquiring a communicable disease.
7. Discuss the various emotional reactions an EMS provider may encounter during the care of sick or injured
persons.
8. Demonstrate the various techniques of resuscitation for the neonate, infant, child, and adult.
