BIO 1022 Week 10_Study Guide (1)O1. Basics of learning Describe the basic steps of an action potential Signal that neurones carry (action potential) Action potential is the process where the impuls... es of positive charge run down the neurone from the dendrites to the terminal through the axon. The dendrites have ion channels which will open and allow a rush of positive charged ions to go through it (Na+). This causes the voltage to rise in the neurone due to the positive ions. Once the signal (action potential) reaches the terminals, the positive charge causes the release of chemicals (neurotransmitters). Hence, increasing voltage in terminal, releases neurotransmitters (exp: dopamine and serotonin). The neurotransmitters will then diffuse across the neighbouring neurone’s dendrites. The channel on the neighbouring dendrites can open by chemical sources which allows the neurotransmitters cause a new signal to the next neurone. This causes many connections and aid in memory and learning. To trigger an action potential, need enough positive ions. When pass threshold, then can only cause action potential [Show More]
