What is a long bone? - Hard, dense bones that provide strength, structure, and
mobility.
Where are long bones found? - Tibia, fibula, femur, metatarsals, and phalanges.
Characteristics of a long bone. - Shaped like hollow cylinders and have three distinct
regions (Diaphysis, Epiphysis, and Metaphysis).
Long bones of the leg. - Femur, tibia, and fibula.
Long bones of the arm. - Humerus, radius, and ulna.
Where are the flat bones found? - Skull, sternum, ribs, and scapulae.
Characteristics of the flat bone. - Made up of a layer of a spongy bone between two
thin layers of compact bone.
Where are short bones found? - Carpals and tarsals.
Characteristics of a short bone. - Shaped roughly as a cube and contain mostly
spongy bone.
Where are irregular bones found? - Vertebrae and sacrum.
Characteristics of an irregular bone. - Vary in shape and structure and therefore do
not fit in any other category (flat, short, long, or sesamoid)
Where is the humerus found? - Upper arm.
Characteristics of the humerus. - The bone in your upper arm that's located between
your elbow and your shoulder
Where is the scapula found? - Located on the upper thoracic region in the thoracic
region on the dorsal surface of the rib cage. (shoulder blades)
Characteristics of the scapula. - Flat triangular-shaped bone.
Where is the clavicle bone found? - The bone that connects the breastplate
(sternum) to the shoulder. (collar bone)
Characteristics of the clavicle. - Sigmoid-shaped long bone with a convex surface
along its medial end when observed from cephalad position.
Where is the vertebrae found? - The spine.
Characteristics of the vertebrae. - The 33 individual, interlocking bones that form the
spinal column.
Where is the patella found? - Knee
Characteristics of the patella. - Flat, inverted triangular bone, situated on the front of
the knee-joint.
Where are the tarsals found? - Ankle.
Characteristics of the tarsals. - The seven bones in the ankle.
The largest is the calcaneus, or heel bone; the talus transmits weight between the
calcaneus and the tibia.
Where are the metatarsals found? - Foot.
Characteristics of metatarsals. - The five metatarsals are dorsally convex long
