Process model development and optimization is one of a the prioritized fields of research for companies in the automation industry. One particular application of interest to ABB Corporate Research C ... enter is automation in maritime industry. Process model development consists of both designing the model and validation. Validation is done by comparing the data obtained by the model with those obtained by testing the systems in real operation conditions. One of the projects at ABB Corporate Research Center within the maritime industry, concerns the development of an propulsion system. Its validation is based on comparing the main characteristics obtained by a numerical model based on first principles and results of tests. Results of this validation will indicate the accuracy of the numerical model. The numerical model for this project is designed under consideration of the system’s physics and then fitted with human-designed parameters to the data.
