RIM 3300 - Quiz 2 What is the difference between Absolute and Relative Grid Mode? - ✔✔Absolute Grid Mode forces the beginning of clips to snap to the grid (when trimmed or dragged), whereas Rela... tive Grid Mode moves clips by increments of the grid. When audio is imported into a session, what are the two basic destinations options for that audio inside and outside Pro Tools? - ✔✔Inside ProTools: Imported audio can go into a new track or the Clips List. Outside Pro Tools: Imported audio will either be copied into the audio files folder or be referenced from its original location. What happens in ProTools when you stop playback with "Insertion follows playback" highlighted? - ✔✔The insertion point moves to the point at which playback was stopped. What are the four different varieties of the Trim Tool? - ✔✔Standard Trim Tool, TC/E Trim (Time Compression/Expansion) Tool, Scrub, and Loop Trim Tool In Pro Tools, how can you create fades across a number of different edits all at once? What if you get an invalid fade message? - ✔✔Select all of the clips and then add fades (Command+F). You may have a clip with no handles. What is a "comp" track, in regard to playlists? - ✔✔A "comp" (compilation, compile, composite) is used to differentiate a master or main playlist into which you edit all of your other playlists/takes/performances. What are the primary reasons many Pro Tools users group tracks together? - ✔✔Track Groups will allow you to control multiple track faders, mutes, or send features together, and also allow you to edit the tracks together without having them in a Clip Group. When would a user want to use a Clip Group as opposed to a Track Group? - ✔✔When they are editing or wish to keep a group of clips arranged together. A Clip Group will create a multi-track clip cluster that will allow you to move, and edit the cluster as one clip. A clip group is mainly used when multiple clips time positions and relationship to one another need to be preserved. What is the difference between "Save" and "Save as..." in Pro Tools in regards to saving a session? - ✔✔"Save" updates (saves) the open .ptx file to its current state, while "Save as..." creates a new .ptx file that is separate from the previous .ptx file that was open. When would you want to use the "Save" command vs. the "Save as..." command? - ✔✔"Save" would be used when you are working on and updating the session you are working on. "Save as..." would be used when you want to create a new version of the session you're working on. For instance, an edit vs. a mix session. Why would you want to make a track inactive in Pro Tools? - ✔✔To conserve processor power and reduce disk activity when a track is not being used. How would you explain the differences between a Bus path in Pro Tools and a bus track (Aux Input setup as an instrument, mix bus, or fx return)? - ✔✔A Bus is a virtual path that can be used for routing signals internally in Pro Tools between tracks. No manipulation of the audio is possible on a Bus path; it is very much like a virtual audio cable. People often refer to an Aux Input track as a bus itself. This kind of bus is a track where we can alter the signal(s) that travel(s) through it. How are bus tracks (Aux Inputs) typically used? Give 3-4 examples. - ✔✔Bus tracks are typically used to process, sum, or effect signals that are passed through it. Typical uses include: Mix bus, instrument busses, parallel fx busses, cue mix busses. What are the different grid options in Pro Tools and which will be the most used? - ✔✔Min:Sec and Bars:Beats will be used for the vast majority of workflows. With work that includes video, a user may also use the Feet+Frames to more easily reference specific frames. How do you properly create a click track and what settings are preferred for 3300 (as detailed in the Pro Tools Style Guide)? - ✔✔Go to Track>Create Click Track. Change the color of the track to 'None' i.e. black. Open the click plugin on the track and change both sounds to Cowbell 1 (or Cowbell 1 Acc). Place the track at the top of your session with the output set to your main outs. What are the two different underlying timebases for tracks used in Pro Tools and what is the default for an audio track? - ✔✔Ticks and samples, audio track = samples. If an audio clip on a track with a samples timebase begins at the downbeat of Bar 3, which is also exactly timepoint 3:00 in the session, what will happen to the clip if the tempo is changed to a faster value? - ✔✔The audio clip will stay at the same absolute timepoint (3:00), but be at a later relative position than the downbeat of Bar 3. How would the situation in Question 2 (above) change if the audio track had a ticks timebase? - ✔✔If the track had a ticks timebase, the audio clip would stay at the downbeat of Bar 3 but would now be located at an earlier absolute time than 3:00. What are the Count Off, Pre Roll, and Post Roll options and how can we use them to improve our recording workflows? - ✔✔Count Off - When enabled, count off places a specified amount of measure before recording begins. Assuming there is a click track, this gives the performer a preset amount of measure of click before recording begins. Pre Roll - When enabled, Pre Roll begins playback the specified amount of time before your insertion point. For example; if you begin playback at measure 32 with Pre Roll enabled and set to 2 measures, playback will begin at measure 30. This could be used simply for playback or recording. If recording using the example above, Pro Tools would automatically begin recording at measure 32 after playback of the previous two measure. Post Roll - When enabled, Post Roll will extend the playback of a selection by the specified amount. What are the master view options for an audio track in the Edit Window and what do they do? - ✔✔Blocks, Waveform, Playlists, Volume, Mute, Pan. Each provides a different edit view "lane" for the track. What is the difference between manual and conductor tempo modes in Pro Tools? - ✔✔In MANUAL tempo mode, you can have only one tempo for the entire session. In CONDUCTOR tempo mode, the multiple tempi can occur in the course of the session. How many inserts and sends does Pro Tools provide? - ✔✔10 stereo inserts available (A-J). 10 stereo sends available (A-J). What time reference can markers be based on in Pro Tools, and how are these indicated? Why would you choose "None" in the time properties of the Memory Locations window? - ✔✔Bars|Beats (indicated through a chevron) or absolute time (indicated by a diamond). A user would choose "None" to have a memory location recall only general properties of the session and not a specific time location. What general properties can be stored in a Memory Location? - ✔✔Zoom settings, Pre/Post Roll times, Track Visibility, Track Heights, Group Enables, Window Configurations, and Comments.
