What are your personal assumptions about: How people develop the kinds of
psychological distress that bring them to counseling? What constitutes "good
mental health" or "a good life?" How do people change, grow emotionally,
develop better coping mechanisms, or change destructive behaviors?
Psychological distress can arrive at anyone’s doorstep as an unwanted guest at any
time or any place, in my opinion. The precipitating reason for the arrival of this distress
can be either internal or external. However, the end result will be the same: internal
strife. When this happens, a person either has the strength to resolve this conflict or
they may not be able to find a way to resolve these negative feelings. At the same time,
if the person is not successful in changing these feelings over a period of time, they may
not be able to interact in a positive way with their spouse, children, and/or job. At this
point, the individual may decide to seek out a way to resolve this inner conflict. Of
course, in many cases, arriving at the decision to find someone professional to assist in
this process may not happen until something drastic happens to force them to face
these negative aspects within their psyche. This is where the professional counselor or
psychologist is invited into their lives; in order to help them to become a whole person
again and to make sense of this inner chaos. The origin of the invitation may be initiated
by the person who needs psychological assistance or a concerned loved one.
Being at peace with one’s inner world of thought processing coupled with a
professional and personal world is a utopic scenario. However, most of us strive for this
type of life or one that is similar to it. But how to arrive at this place in our lives is a
journey. The main way, in my opinion, to maintain good mental health for a more
desirable inner and outside world is to be able to embrace the changes that come within
the context of our everyday lives. To be able to switch beliefs about a concept is a life
enriching process. Why? Because when we trust ourselves in this manner, we validate
ourselves and prepare the way for future sequences of events with a more optimistic
outlook. In other words, we must be able to accept change and be prepared for it to
maintain good mental health combined with a good life.
In remembering the old adage that “the only constant in life is change,” we can
grow emotionally. However, it is also important to remember that it’s ok to depend on
others at times in order to expand ourselves emotionally, as well. Some people seek
counseling because they are wise. These special individuals want to continue to change
but sometimes feel they need a little encouragement to venture out into a new
neighborhood of unfamiliarity. A good counselor may be all they need; a small push and
they are on their way! However, in some cases, there are others who seem to be on a
path of destruction. To counsel an individual who is walking down this avenue will be a
unique adventure for the counselor who is brave enough to face this challenge.
However, in closing this discussion, I would like to return to a primary idea. The client
must first be willing to accept the idea of change. Even if only a glimmer of this desire is
identified in the client there is hope for this individual. For I believe that prevention from
destructive thinking begins with the metamorphosis of new beginnings!
