Mechanism of Action - Thiazides increases renal excretion of water, sodium chloride and potassium Mechanism of Action - Angiotensive-Converting Enzyme Reduces levels of angiotensin II & increases levels of bradykinin. results in the prevention of vasoconstriction and aldosterone-mediated volume expression. DRUG OF CHOICE FOR DM and/or CKD due to renal protection - avoid in AA population. "PRIL" drugs Mechanism of Action - Angiotensin Receptor Blockers Block angiotensin II receptors on blood vessels in the heart and adrenals, increases renal excretion of sodium and water. "INE" drugs - choice for AA population Mechanism of Action - Calcium Channel Blockers (CCBs) have both inotropic and chronotropic effect, meaning the heart gets both depressed and slowed down HTN meds in AA population should start with diuretics due to higher incidence of mortality from HTN AA treatment.
