iHuman Reflection Week 6 Chamberlain College of Nursing NR 511 Differential Diagnosis and Primary Care Practicum Every day I encounter new patients wit... h issues that are entirely new to me, and a problem I encounter first, is trying find information in the moment. I have gotten much more comfortable with my resources and accessing the right ones at the right time. My opportunity for growth would be in developing the correct treatment plan and selecting appropriate diagnostic tests, medications, and other treatments. The sheer volume of choices makes the task of selecting the appropriate diagnostic test so challenging for the practitioner. In approximately 15% of diagnostic encounters, primary care providers report uncertainty when ordering lab tests (Sheppard, 2018). To order the most appropriate test, the clinician must have a well-rounded understanding of the patient’s history, symptoms, and signs to achieve an adequate suspicion toward the probability of a certain condition or disease process. Keeping up with the number of resources and data and being able to decipher which direction to pursue makes the practitioner’s job that much more complicated. An evidence-based improvement strategy to improve my performance in my next virtual patient encounter would be with the use of checklists. Checklists have been implemented in many areas of care to help improve the safety of care and the diagnostic process (Nikolouzakis, 2018). Checklists have proven extremely helpful in preventing health care acquired infections, while time-outs have prevented many surgical-site and care errors. [Show More]
