CHAPTER 1 The Problem and its Setting Introduction People became fond of electricity because without it, efficient and prolific production would not be possible now. This made the use of electrici ... ty grow wider in the 21st century, that being said, making it expensive. Not only that electricity is expensive, people nowadays also encounter different problems regarding this since it has various hazards to our life especially when left behind – an example is the fires brought by unattended electrical systems, such as appliances. Almost every member of a household is in a rush, making them forget and unaware of the safety of their establishment. In schools, electricity also made it possible to cause these tragedies, losing large amounts of important data and records. Even in modern hospitals where a lot of people’s life is at risk – the presence of modernized equipment in hospitals might also put patients’ lives at stake if these are left unattended. To reduce the risk of these dangers, the researchers came up with a project study that aims to remedy similar problems regarding electrical hazards by developing an application that can automatically shut off electrical systems in an establishment in just a tap, even if they are on-the-go. This project aims to provide solution to several problems involving electrical fires, especially in schools wherein electrical system safety is vital. In this project, the researchers aim to automate electrical systems such that it can be controlled using cloud computing, network, and mobile devices. The study also makes use of application development to ease the control of electrical systems even if the user is on-the-go. The 1 project’s objective not only limits the boundaries of controlling the electrical system but also monitoring the entire power consumption of the establishment utilized by the user by making it possible to notify the application users who controlled the system in the registered establishment. Statement of the Problem One of common problems that the school is dealing with is the overconsumption of electricity. There are several reasons behind this. To aid this school-wide problem, the researchers devised an application that can act as a switch and control the usage of electrical systems all over the place. This project will also help to remedy the dangers and hazards of leaving electrical systems unattended. Hypothesis of the Study Certain factors, such as unattended electrical systems and continual usage of appliances, cause overconsumption of electricity. Several studies state that overconsumption of electricity can be prevented if electrical systems can be controlled wirelessly or automatically. Background of the Study It is true that electricity has made a great impact in our society. As a matter of fact, several innovations regarding electricity have been implemented. As generations pass by, electricity innovates further – from basic concepts such as switching up to modernization which leads to automation. This continual innovation and development cannot be hindered for technology advances from time to time. Due to this, several dangers and 2 problems regarding electricity cannot be deducted – from overconsumption problems which may lead to fires, which also in turn, lead people to massive losses. In this matter, the researchers conducted a study on how to prevent or at least minimize these common problems concerning electricity. In this study, several questions are provided, as such: 1. How is the research going to be of help to the society?  Electricity, being a great deal to the modern era, has several pros and cons, such as it helps people to be prolific but at a cost, overconsumption may actually lead them to have minimal profits and it may even lead them to put in large amounts of money for unnecessary factors. 2. Who and what would be the target of this research?  The entire school administration and the whole university is the priority of this research to help the school solve various problems concerning power consumption. 3. What are the certain factors that will be considered in carrying out this research?  It is true that electricity has various applications. For this study, certain factors such as power consumption in each classroom, office, and library. Also, the frequency of consumption of electricity in each vicinity of the university will be tackled.
