MED SURG - RESPIRATORY
*Arterial Blood Gas
-Respiratory failure occurs when oxygenation is inadequate (hypoxemic failure) and/or when ventilation is inadequate (hypercapnic failure) → ABG analysis provides objective data about the efficiency of gas exchange in the lungs
*Rapid Response Team
-When a client is demonstrating clinical deterioration (dyspnea, confusion, restlessness, heart rate <40 or >130/min, Systolic BP <90, RR <8 or >28/min, O2 <90% despite oxygen, urine output <50 mL in 4 hrs), the nurse’s priority is to prevent full respiratory/cardiac arrest by calling rapid response team
*Chest Tube
-Bubbling in the suction control chamber indicates patency and appropriate level of suction
*Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
-COPD pts: consume high calorie diet, seek medical attention for signs of infection (increased sputum, worsening dyspnea, fever), obtain appropriate vaccinations (flu, pneumococcal)
-Etiologic factors: current or former tobacco smoking, prolonged exposure to occupational respiratory irritants, chronic exposure to air pollution, and genetic predisposition
*Obstructive Sleep Apnea
-OSA is characterized by partial/complete airway obstruction during sleep
-OSA interventions: CPAP during sleep, lifestyle changes (weight loss, exercise, avoiding food/alcohol/sedatives at bedtime)
*Inhalation Injuries
-Carbon monoxide toxicity can occur when fuel burning (wood, coal) stoves or appliances are used in poorly ventilated settings → CO toxicity symptoms: headache, dizziness, nausea
*Asthma
