The short story “A Logic Named Joe” is truly marvelous science fiction. After reading it halfway through, my first thought was that this story is a witticism to the current day computers and acc... ess to the internet. However, after reading it and looking online for the date when this fiction was written, I was stunned by the Murray Leinster’s prediction and visionary views on computers. The time when the fiction was written, the computers existed but were different than the ones we currently have or depicted in the story and the internet did not exist. This tale completely relates to computer science and data science and also draws our attention to the consequences of the personal data collected every minute by the companies. The plot revolves around a technology known as a 'logic,' which begins to change the way data is accessible on the 'Tank,' a network of audio-visual and information resources. In reality, the machine Joe was supposed to provide entertainment programs and actions similar to web-searches. However, due to a minor defect (that was not detected) while manufacturing caused the system to malfunction and over-ride the ‘censor-circuits’ and making information thought to be harmful available to anybody who requests it This includes details on how to pull off the ideal murder, rob a bank, become rich very fast, build a perpetual motion machine, and other scientific questions. In simple words, there was no filter to that data that was accessible to humans and one can get answers to any question being asked. The data was protected from humanity and order was restored only when Joe was tuned off. [Show More]
