○ Professor and class,
Nursing informatics is used to communicate information, data and
knowledge in the nursing practice. Nursing informatics is composed of
nursing science, computer science and information science (HIMMS,
2019). To be a successful nurse, effective communication is key.
Nursing informatics could be applied to all areas of professional
nursing practice such as clinical practice, administration, education and
research.
A registered nurse working in a clinical setting uses informatics
daily. For example, the use of electronic health records (EHR), and
electronic medical records (EMR) is a form of information technology
that nurses use to document patient information. They also use
Telehealth and EHR’s to communicate with other health care team
members (ATI Community Health Nursing, 2016)
