RELI 448N Week 8 Discussion: Contemporary Religions Week 8 Discussion • • What are some of the challenges facing major religious traditions in the modern world? As nurses, what are some ... of the particular issues that you might encounter with patients regarding the intersection of faith and healthcare (see the Science and Ethical Issues section of Chapter 12; you can address one or more of the issues noted in this section)? How might the material covered in this course affect the way in which you respond to these concerns? Professor and Classmates, Some of the challenges facing religions in this day and age is the hot topic of abortion and birth control. Abortion has always been considered a taboo topic and has traditionally been thought of as murder in the eyes of religion. The question is what happens when it is medically ethical to save the mother? As stated in our textbook, the founders of the major religious traditions never had to address these issues specifically. That does not mean, however, that their followers today should not concern themselves with these issues (Molloy, 2013). Many people don’t give a second thought about while others hold very strong opinions. I believe that the biggest issue faced today especially in healthcare, is the lack of knowledge and understanding of other individuals’ faith. “ Spiritual or compassionate care involves serving the whole person—the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual.” (Puchalski, 2001). This course helped me recognize and know how to approach the many religions I encounter every day in my nursing specialty. Many times, working for hospice I have come in contact who are now facing a terminal illness. They are now facing the end of their life and having to ponder on decisions they made in the past such as abortions. I’ve had patients feel as if they were being punished by God with a terminal illness because they had an abortion in the past. As a hospice nurse, I have to take a step back and learn what type of religion and belief system they follow or were raised in. In many patients’ lives, spiritual or religious beliefs may affect the decisions they make about their health and illness and the treatment choices they make. It is critical that us healthcare professionals listen to all aspects of our patients’ lives that can affect their decision making and their coping skills. Molloy, M. (2013). Experiencing the world’s religions. New York, NY: McGraw-Hill Puchalski, C. (2001). The role of spirituality in health care. Proceedings (Baylor University. Medical Center), 14(4), 352-7.
