One problem that I choose to describe is the issue of managing chronic pain in t... he hospital. Chronic pain is usually defined as pain that continues three months or longer (Noonan, 2018). There are many examples in recent literature that describe this problem of pain management. Pain, as we know it in nursing, is subjective to the patient, and we are taught certain ways of determining if a patient is in pain, if they are unable to talk, based on non-verbal signals. Pain management is always important when a patient enters a hospital because we want to ensure a patient is comfortable, to in turn, aid in their healing process. Patients who deal with chronic pain sometimes don't know what else to do if prescribed medication is not working for them; at times patients overdose on medications, or mix medications with alcohol and end up having a fatal outcome. It is sometimes difficult knowing the difference when someone is seeking drugs for a ‘high’ or whether they are actually in severe of pain. This has become a growing problem in healthcare.
