HUMN 303N Painting Analysis & Reflection:Rosie The Riveter Rosie the Riveter is an oil painting created by Norman Rockwell in 1943. The painting features a strong brawny women in denim work attire wi... th a sandwich in her hand. She is taking her lunch break with a rivet gun and a lunch box with the name “Rosie” in her lap. Underneath her, the rivet gun, and the lunch box is a copy of Hitler’s manifesto, Mein Kampf. In the background flies an American flag. As the viewer, a person can automatically know that this style of painting was created during the time of World War II due to one key elements. Many people are familiar with Hitler’s manifesto, Mein Kampf as being a key element to understanding the rise of Nazi Germany. Rosie is featured as a women working in the industry to support the war efforts during World War II. “Rosie the Riveter was viewed as a loyal, efficient, patriotic, compliant, and even pretty” (Santana & Cristina, 2016). This painting became a symbol for the “Rosie’s” across America working for the war effort. The Post’s Cover image proved hugely popular, and the magazine loaned it to the U.S. Treasury Department for the duration of the war, for use in war bond drives (Rosie the Riveter- Norman Rockwell Museum, 2018).This campaign was used to recruit female workers, and Rosie the Riveter became perhaps the most iconic image of working women. The symbol encouraged America women to fight the Second World War on home turf . War posters and magazine ads of the time reinforced the duty women had towards the war efforts.
