Nurses have an essential role in the prevention and early detection of cancer, as well as the diagnosis and treatment by utilizing the systematic problem-solving method of the nursing process. The purpose of this paper is to diagnosis and staging of cancer; list complications, side effects of treatment, and methods to lessen the physical and psychological effects of cancer; discuss factors contributing to annual incidence and mortality rates; review education and support of by the American Cancer Society; utilization of the nursing process; and discuss how liberal arts and science studies contributes to nursing. Diagnosis and Staging Cancer. Diagnosing the possibility of cancer is a stressful event for patients and caregivers. Patients may undergo several days to weeks of diagnostic studies. The methods used to diagnose, and stage cancer is determined by the location and type of suspected cancer (Norris, 2020). Diagnostic tests include physical examinations, imaging test, laboratory test, and pathology reports (American Joint Committe on Cancer, 2020). Once the location and type are known, data collected from the diagnostic studies is used to stage the cancer (Norris, 2020). The two basic methods for classifying cancers are grading and staging. Grading classifies cancer by the cellular characteristics and staging classifies cancer according to the clinical spread of the disease. This helps the physician to develop a prognosis and a course of treatment or management plan (Norris, 2020).
