SOCS-315 Week 3 Case Study

Document Content and Description Below

SOCS-315 Week 3 Case Study Define and give examples of how sex, gender, and culture play a part in defining family roles. To the extent that you are open to sharing the information, what part did g... ender roles play in your family when you were you? Was your family a traditional gender role family? In the collectivist culture, gender roles are influenced and shaped by the cultures social identity (Welch, 2012). An example is in China, traditional gender roles influence experiences of intimacy. Women assume the roles as being a subordinate to husbands, and do housework and motherly roles. There are also se differences when it comes to intimacy. Women define intimacy as "being" together while men see it as "doing" something together. "Gender" refers to a socially learned behavior and expectations associated with being male/female. When you talk about gender in a traditional sense, the female is seen as the caregiver, the nurturer, while the male is the breadwinner, and the one who works to provide for the family. The roles on family are different now since more families are more diverse, but some people still follow the guidelines of traditional gender roles, in some cultures. When it comes to my family and when I was growing up, my mother and father had the traditional gender roles. My mother was a stay at home mom, up until all7 of us were school age, and didn’t need to be home anymore. My mother did all the housewife, and motherly duties, while my father worked long hours to provide for us. We struggled when I was a kid, but my dad and mom did their best to raise us, provide a roof over our heads, clothes on our backs, and food in the fridge. As I got older and my youngest sister had prepared to attend kindergarten for the first time, is when my mother got a full time job working for the city of Philadelphia. Even though my mother was working a job, she still did her motherly duties, kept the house cleaned and straight, and also made dinner for all of us. I don’t know if I agreed with the traditional family role, because it didn’t seem fair to me, but that is how they did it. Now that I am older, I feel that both the husband and wife should provide for the family, and both help out around the house, cooking, cleaning, helping with the kids. The traditional gender roles, and roles of a housewife, seems like slave labor to me. Why work all day, then go home and have to care for the kids all day, without any help from the person you are married to? Doesn’t seem fair at all. GENDER ROLES IN FAMILY LIFE. (n.d.).
