Asthma is diagnosed through symptomatic analysis and pulmonary function tests. Asthma is suspected in the patient if they present with wheezing, nonproductive cough, and shortness of breath which are ... exacerbated with exercise, weather changes, and irritants (So et al., 2018). Cough without the respiratory symptoms can lead to the exclusion of the asthma diagnosis. The patient’s diagnosis is confirmed with lung function tests. The pulmonary function tests may indicate different degrees of obstruction. Spirometry is the gold standard for diagnosis. In the 16-year-old, reversible airway obstruction is determined by an increase in at least 12% forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) from baseline after use of bronchodilator (Boulet et al., 2019). When this criterion is met, alternative diagnoses are excluded to remain with the asthma diagnosis. Other pulmonary diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart failure, and upper respiratory infections should be excluded before the patient is confirmed to have asthma.
