1. What constitutes personal protective equipment? When should personal protective equipment
be worn? Why is personal protective equipment important?
When handling hazardous substances or chemicals, personal protection equipment,
such as protective clothing, goggles, lab coats, and shields, is required and should be
worn at all times throughout laboratory activities. Protective gear is essential in lowering
the risk of damage when working with dangerous materials or chemicals and also helps
stop or slow the spread of infectious diseases.
2. Why are there increasing levels of biological containment procedures? What level of biological
containment will be necessary to complete the experiments in this manual?
To show proper disposal and handling of laboratory items, more stringent safety
procedures have been put in place. However, level 1 containment protocols are all that
are necessary for the lab experiments described in our booklet.
3. What document should you refer to if you have questions regarding the safety or disposal of a
chemical? Where can this document be located?
It is advised to refer to the Biosafety Lab chart if you are unsure how to handle or
dispose of a chemical safely. This paper is available on the CDC website.
4. List five safety procedures that should always be adhered to when working with
microorganisms.
a. Hands need to be washed with soap both before and after a lab
b. No food stuff or eating is allowed during the experiment.
c. While carrying out an experiment, you shouldn't put anything in your mouth,
including your fingers, lab equipment, pencils, etc.
d. You must conduct your experiments at home on a surfaces that are impermeable
and devoid of any food or materials. Rugs and carpet should not be utilized in
experiment spaces.
