Our proteoglycan synthesis is reduced, and those things combined lead to a reduction in the matrix structure of the articular cartilage and the decreased ability of that cartilage to attract fluid. Of course, fluid and then water is a lot of where the compressive and tensile stiffness of the cartilage comes from. So if we're attracting less fluid, we have less stiffness of the cartilage. If we get just more water in there and less healthy glycosaminoglycans complexes, the hydraulic pressure of that articular cartilage is going to also decrease. And what we end up with with aging is literally articular cartilage that is not as strong as the cartilage in younger folks.
