Document Content and Description Below

Efflux from a Tank Natcha Tritrakoolsin Introduction Tanks are commonly used in almost all industries to hold several processes from reaction to separation. After each process, fluid from the tank... must be either transferred to another system for further processing or drained down as a waste through the pipes. Apparently, engineers do not have time to do an experiment to find the exact time the fluid used to drain from the tank through a pipe for every system. Thus, Quass-steady-state Mechanical Energy Balance (MEB) equation and mass balance equation are widely used to approximate the theoretical efflux time, time required to drain fluid from the tank for certain height. In order to simplify those equations, the assumption that friction energy losses at the pipe entrance and exit are negligible due to high skin friction loss could be made. Fully-developed flow throughout the length of pipe is also assumed [1]. However, in real life, contraction and expansion of fluid at the entrance and the exit of the pipes cause the friction losses. Moreover, the flow does not get to fully-develop as soon as it enters the pipe. It takes a certain length for the flow to get fully developed which is called an entrance length [2] [Show More]
