Exploration Exercise #3 Worksheet Background: Tides are a coastal process that have been studied for centuries and this regular rise and fall of water on the coastline is important to transportatio ... n, industry, fisheries, and marine life. If you’ve been to a beach, you know that high and low tides can vary dramatically within a day, and within a week. In this exploration, we will look at real data on tides, and think about differences in tides for various locations. Here, we will explore the differences in tides for several US coastal locations – Admiralty Head, Pensacola Beach, and Portland (Maine). You will use Google Maps to find these locations, and NOAA charts and data to explore these locations. You will make observations on the data, and use the data to think critically about tides in each location. The overall goal of this exercise is to provide you with real-life examples of tidal data, to help you better understand why tides differ from place to place.
