Gestalt Psychology Reflection “The whole is different from the sum of its parts.” This statement is often used in correlation with Gestalt psychology to reflect two significant aspects- the holis ... tic and phenomenological approaches. Ideologies in Gestalt psychology focus on perception and receiving visual interpretations in whole, rather than parts. Psychologists who followed Gestalt philosophies provided the world with a different perspective on experiences as it relates to human behavior. The Gestalt movement also established principles based on human perception. Promoting the new way of studying the human mind, the Gestalt psychology movement revolutionized its era in science. Developing in the late nineteenth century, Gestalt psychology was founded on the principles of structuralism and functionalism concerning perception. Pioneering psychologists, Immanuel Kant and Ernst Mach established the initial ideas of Gestalt psychology- acknowledging the significance of consciousness while concentrating on the wholeness of perception. Though Kant and Ernst shared the same idea, each psychologist came with his approach. Kant argued that pieces of information are organized in meaningful ways through association, forming a coherent perceptual experience while, Ernst suggested that an individual’s perception of an object does not change despite changing our orientation of the object (Goodwin, 2015). Early concepts researched by Kant and Ernst allowed Gestalt psychology to advance and become widely studied by their successors. [Show More]
