Person Situation Interactions Within this paper, I’m going to look at Maslow’s hierarchy theory and compare it to that of Roger’s p ... erson-centered approach. Next, I will explain how these methods contribute to personality development and the needs of our growth patterns as to how we form our character. Lastly, I will discuss which theory of the two that I can relate to and how I feel that it impacts my life. Comparison Rogers and Maslow both had the belief of the humanistic approach to our personalities. The humanistic way to deal with identity trusts that we have through and through freedom, or the ability to control and additionally change our surroundings by being responsible for our own behaviors and responses. This is because we are the ones whom control our destiny. Personality growth is an essential part of what it means to be human. Admin (2014) states “However, the difference between the two psychologists can be identified in their theories of self-actualization” (para, 5). I believe that if we all just take a moment to think about this, we will see the truth in these opinions. Self-actualization is at the peak of Maslow’s hierarchy, which is the need to reach our full potential, and for Maslow, it is the most significant need in his theory. McLeod (2016) stated, “Maslow wanted to understand what motivates people” (para, 2). Rogers, on the other hand, did not call his person-centered theory self-actualization it was considered self-concept. For Rogers, it was more about how people viewed themselves, instead of how they are. According to McLeod (2014) “This means that self-actualization occurs when a person’s “ideal self” (i.e. who they would like to be) is congruent with their actual behavior (self-image) [sic]” (para, 8). Both Maslow and Rogers' hypotheses are affected by how individuals see themselves, and what it takes to achieve full mindfulness and self-acknowledgment. [Show More]
