1. An author carefully chooses words and phrases to establish tone, or a
particular attitude toward his or her subject. Some authors use formal
language to convey a serious tone, while others use a more conversational
style. What tone does de Waal establish in the opening paragraphs of his
essay? What words and phrases create this tone?
Frans B.M. de Waal establishes an energetic/zestful tone in the first few
paragraphs. He seems to be very excited to give this information. Some words
or phrases he uses that create this enthusiastic tone include “What intrigues
me the most..”(B.M., paragraph 1), “I cannot suppress a chuckle myself.”(B.M.,
paragraph 2), “It’s such a happy sound.”(B.M., paragraph 2), “we’re all
interconnected”(paragraph 3) These words and phrases show his excitement
or enthusiasm in this subject.

The primary claim of this is that Homosapiens are remarkably easily
swayed in one emotional or physical direction or another by its fellows. The
article mainly focuses on involuntary bodily responses that we make as a
