NUR 2407 Pharmacology Final Exam This medication is cautioned in patients with renal insufficiency: - Milk of Mag (MOM) Adverse effects of MOM: - Hypermagnesemia Tums (Calcium carbo... nate): Side effects: - Sarcoidosis, increased PTH activity, hypercalcemia, loss of body water, constipation, kidney stones, kidney disease, tumor that dissolves bone These medications should not be concurrently taken with tums (calcium carbonate): - antibiotics ("-mycin") ex: azithromycin Medication administration and dietary information for Carafate: - Administer on an empty stomach 1 hour before meals or at bedtime Take antacids 30 minutes before or 30 minutes after Carafate What happens to the body when calcium supplements and antacids are taken concurrently? - Antacids raise Ca levels which can lead to hypercalcemia. Hypercalcemia = weak bones, kidney stones, heart and brain issues.
