This week (January 4th-8th) I have read chapters 1 and 2 of Pop Culture book by Shirley A. Fedorak, as well as the introduction and chapter 1 of Culture and Everyday life by David Inglis,
this week I also read an article about black celebrities boycotting the Oscars award show because
it is centered around predominantly white culture and achievements. I felt the need to include the
article in this journal because when i started this course I felt thoroughly overwhelmed by the aspect of culture and what it defines and how it effects our everyday lives, and i felt this article
helped put what culture is (what a group of people believes, thinks and feels) and how it affects
our everyday lives into a bit more perspective for me. One thing in the assigned reading that really caught my attention was, in Culture and Everyday life, it mentions that culture is generally
no longer defined by class (working, upper-middle, lower-middle). I don’t understand how this
no longer defines culture when it still applies. The upper-middle class tends to look down at the
other two classes, who struggle to make ends meet in most cases, look up to them. It is strange to
accept the concept that because one group of people acts different they are subject to less
chances and opportunities for life, or career, advancement and have to fight to make life better
for themselves. While those born into a richer family are taught to act or move more “elegantly”
and are in turn subject to more chances and opportunities for life, or career advances. Another
