Biology > STUDY GUIDE > The Peripheral Nervous System Nevada State College - BIOLOGY 223ch 13 worksheet (All)
This chapter examines the second major division of the nervous system: the peripheral nervous system, or PNS. Here we explore the structure and function of the spinal and cranial nerves, how the CNS ... and PNS work together to detect and perceive sensory stimuli, and how they work together to control movement. Finally, we examine how sensory and motor functions are connected via reflex arcs. What Do You Already Know? Try to answer the following questions before proceeding to the next section. If you’re unsure of the correct answers, give it your best attempt based on previous courses, previous chapters, or just your general knowledge. • What is the longest spinal nerve in the body? • Why do you blink when something touches your eye? • What is the purpose of the knee-jerk reflex? Module 13.1: Overview of the Peripheral Nervous System Module 13.1 in your text introduces you to the divisions of the PNS and the structure of its main organs, the peripheral nerves. By the end of the module, you should be able to do the following: 1. Explain the differences between the sensory and motor divisions of the peripheral nervous system. 2. Differentiate between the somatic motor and visceral motor (autonomic) divisions of the nervous system. 3. Describe the structure of a peripheral nerve, and explain the differences between spinal nerves and cranial nerves. Build Your Own Glossary Following is a table listing key terms from Module 13.1. Before you read the module, use the glossary at the back of your book or look through the module to define the following terms [Show More]
