Tom Lake by Ann Patchett is a novel about a mother who, while working on her family's cherry orchard during the 2020 pandemic lockdown, recounts to her three adult daughters the story of her youthful romance with a man who became a famous actor.
Plot Summary
In the spring of 2020, Lara Nelson's three daughters return to the family's cherry farm in Northern Michigan to help with the harvest because their usual seasonal workers are unavailable due to the pandemic. To pass the time during the laborious work, the daughters beg Lara to tell them the full story of her past romance and summer stock theater experience at a place called Tom Lake with the now-famous actor Peter Duke.
As Lara narrates her past, moving between the present day and her early twenties in the 1980s, the novel explores her life as an aspiring actress, her relationship with the charismatic but flawed Peter Duke, and how she eventually met her stable and solid husband, Joe. The daughters, who have their own ideas about their mother's history, learn about the choices that led Lara to her current life as a cherry farmer's wife, a path she is deeply content with. The novel masterfully interweaves themes from Thornton Wilder's play Our Town, in which Lara often played the role of Emily.
Themes
- Youthful Love vs. Enduring Love: The novel contrasts the passionate, whirlwind romance Lara experienced with Peter Duke with the steady, committed love of her long-term marriage to Joe.
- Memory and Storytelling: Patchett explores how memories shape our present selves and the power of the stories we choose to tell (or not tell) our families.
- Destiny and Choice: The narrative meditates on the choices people make and how those decisions, seemingly small at the time, shape the trajectory of an entire life.
- Family Dynamics: The novel provides piercing insights into mother-daughter relationships and the complex dynamics of a family unit that is forced back together in an unprecedented time.
