The Darkest Evening* by Ann Cleeves is the ninth novel in the DCI Vera Stanhope series, a character-driven police procedural set in the snowy wilds of Northumberland. The story intertwines a murder investigation with Vera's personal past when the crime scene turns out to be her father's ancestral home.
Synopsis
Driving home during a heavy blizzard, Detective Inspector Vera Stanhope becomes disoriented and discovers an abandoned car with a young toddler strapped in the back seat. Fearing the child will freeze, she takes him to the nearest house, Brockburn, a run-down stately home where a Christmas party is in full swing. Vera is familiar with the house, as it is where her estranged father, Hector, grew up. Outside the house, the body of a young woman, later identified as Lorna Falstone, the child's mother, is found dead in the snow.
Trapped by the blizzard, Vera and her team must investigate the murder with a limited pool of suspects from the party and surrounding estate tenants. The investigation uncovers a web of dark family secrets, class tensions, and personal entanglements, forcing Vera to confront her own complicated family history and her relationship with her father's wealthy relatives.
