GLG 100 Lab: The Greenhouse Effect
Directions:
Work through the problems in this lab and record your answers on this worksheet in the
places provided. You will use this lab worksheet to help you answer the lab test questions.
Note: Part One has an online interactive component.
Part One: Greenhouse Effect
Note: this has an online component. Work through the interactive using the following procedure.
Procedure
1. You have two containers, each containing soil, a thermometer and a stand for the thermometer. In
addition, you also have one container lid and a spray bottle.
2. Dampen the soil in each container with water from the spray bottle (use the same amount of sprays
for each container!).
3. Place one stand in each container resting it on the surface of the soil. Place one thermometer in
each container resting the bulb on the stand. This is so we measure air temperature not soil
temperature.
4. Securely place the lid on one of the containers (an unsecured lid will prevent you from obtaining the
correct numbers).
5. Position the lamp directly above the containers in such a way that each container will receive equal
lighting.
6. Record the starting temperature (0 (Start)) for each container in the data table on the next page.
7. Turn the lamp on.
8. Record the temperature (in °C) for both thermometers every minute for 9 minutes straight on the
data table. This is simulating daylight with the sun shining.
9. After you have recorded the ninth minute, shut the lamp off. Start recording the temperature of both
thermometers every minute for the next ten minutes with the lamp shut off on the data table. This is
simulating the night time, when the sun has set for the day.
10. At the bottom of each column in the data table, calculate the temperature change for each of the
thermometers for both the daytime and nighttime simulation time periods by subtracting the start
temperature from the final temperature for each container (0-9 minutes and 10-19 minutes)
