Lab 4 – Zooplankton: Diel Vertical Migration & Morphologies Part 1: Diel Vertical Migration (DVM) On a separate sheet of paper answer the following questions: 1) What are the X and Y axes in Figu ... res 2 through 5? What are the units? (2 pts) (HINT – for this question you will need to google UTC) Y axis= Depth (m) meters X axis= Time (UTC) universal time coordinated 2) What do the colors denote? What is the range of values depicted? What do you think the colors represent? (3 pts) The colors denote the acoustic signals being reflected and its intensity, it is the highest at red and lowest at blue. The units represented are dB = Decibel. 3) What is the general pattern shown by all of the figures? (1 pt) The biggest pattern I see is that the zooplanktons are reflected from near the surface of the water during the night and during the day they are deflected from the bottom of the ocean, the depth from where the zooplanktons are reflected from increases during daylight and decreases during the night. 4) How does the pattern differ throughout the year? To provide some data to discuss this question, make a Table that has 4 columns labeled: Date, Ascent time, Descent time, & Strength at surface. The 4 rows are the dates: Jan, Apr, Jul, Oct. Paste the table here. Fill in the table using the data in Figures 2 through 5. (8 pts) Jan Apr Jul Oct Date 1/1/12 4/1/12 7/1/12 10/1/12 Ascent time 0100 UTC 0200 UTC 0400 UTC 0100 UTC Descent time 1800 UTC 1300 UTC 1200 UTC 1500 UTC Strength at surface 12 dB 15 dB 13 dB 17 dB [Show More]
