A) Define abstract reasoning and explain why it is an important skill for business professionals.
Abstract reasoning- The ability to make and manipulate models such as data models or process models.
Abstract reasoning is important to have because it allows you to be able to think outside the box to take
in all the data and form a plan that will help you accomplish your goals. By having a broader sense of
understanding will enable you to accomplish a great deal where having a rigid way of thinking only
causes stagnation and failure.
B) Explain how a list of items in inventory and their quantity on hand is an abstraction of a physical
inventory.
Having an inventory list and their quantities helps you to visualize your products, helps you to know what
is on hand, what is low and what and when to order. By keeping track of these things assures you
will have less problems and be more efficient. You will be able to answer specific questions as to if you
have certain items in stock and it will make for a better business.
C) Give three abstractions commonly used in business
Information System, Data Models, and Process models
D) Explain how Jennifer failed to demonstrate effective abstract reasoning skills.
Jennifer only did what she was told to do or repeated what she heard. She did not take the initiative to
come up with ideas or formulate a plan. Her job wanted a team player someone who could contribute to
the company and help the company grow with new ideas and new methods of doing things. They may
have not implemented her suggestions but she could have at least contributed to the team. She did
none of this so that is why they let her go.
E) Can people increase their abstract reasoning skills? If so how? If not, why not?
Yes, they can or at least most people can those that are not stuck in their ways and are open to new
ideas the whole point of abstract reasoning is to develop the ability to adapt and change to create new
and inventive ways of doing things in order to make things easier and more productive. Through
collaboration and team work being able to look outside the box to the greater picture one is able to
move and grow. If one does not allow themselves to grow and change, they will eventually stagnate and
die.
