1. What was the chemical composition of the pellet that softenned in acetone in Part 1? Why is this material soluble in acetone and not water? Be sure to cite any sources. Hint: Your answer should i... nclude the terms “polar” and “nonpolar”! The chemical composition of the pellet that softenned in acetone in Part 1 was Polystyrene (PS). PS is not soluble in water because it is non-polar, while water is polar. Non-polar molecules will not dissolved in polar solutions. However, acetone is also non-polar, so there are intramolecular forces that will allow PS to dissolve in the acetone. 2. What is a protein, and why is it a polymer? What happened to the protein, with the addition of three chemicals, and why? A protein is a macromolecule found within the body that operates and controls many of the body’s functions. Proteins are considered a polymer because they are made through the polymerization of amino acids. The protein in this case was the albumin. When the three different chemicals were added to the albumin a precipitate formed. This is because when the albumin reacts with the chemical it formed an insoluble ionic compound which came out of solution as a solid. 3. Give an example of a biological polymer. What does its subunit look like? Why is it considered a polymer? One example of a biological polymer is glycogen. Glycogen is a polysaccharide made up of monosaccharide subunits. In the case of glycogen the subunit is glucose. Glycogen is considered a polymer because it is made through the process of polymerization in which glucose molecules are brought together through dehydration synthesis. 4. Discuss why the density of the two branched material (HDPE and LDPE) differed, [Show More]
