Patient's group B strep vagino-rect ... al culture taken at 36 weeks was positive. During the 3rd trimester (35-37 weeks) all pregany patients are screend for this bacterial infection. This should be treated prophylactically during labor and delvery to prevent complications such as meningitis, sepsis, pneumonia and possible death. DIAGNOSTIC TESTS (REASON FOR TEST AND RESULTS) PATIENT INFORMATION ANTICIPATED PHYSICAL FINDINGS ANTICIPATED NURSING INTERVENTIONS • Administer intrapartum antibiotic therapy prophylaxis for the following patients: o GBS bacterium during pregnancy o GBS positive screening during pregnancy o Unknown GBS status who is delivering < 37 weeks of gestation • Educate patient about treatment and prevention • Administer 5 MIL Unit IV of Penicillin (loading does) and then 2.5 MIL Units Q 4hrs until delivery • Confirm does and medication with another nurse • Assist patient with comfort measure [Show More]
